Port forwarding allows incoming connections through your router's NAT firewall to a specific local device. It is safe if the software running on that port (e.g., Minecraft or Plex) is updated and password-protected. Never forward unencrypted sensitive ports like Telnet (23) or expose Windows RDP (3389) directly to the public internet without a VPN.
Port forwarding directs only specific individual ports (e.g. 25565) to a local device while keeping the rest of the firewall active. DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) exposes all 65,535 ports on that device completely to the internet, creating severe security vulnerabilities.
Common reasons include: (1) The application/server is not running on your computer, (2) Windows Defender or macOS Firewall is blocking the incoming port, (3) Your device changed its local IP (use a static DHCP reservation), or (4) Your ISP uses CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT) where you don't have a public IPv4 address.
