Router Security Audit & Scorecard
Evaluate your router against real-world attack vectors. Answer 10 quick questions to calculate your wireless hardening score and view step-by-step remediation fixes.
Your router has several high-risk settings enabled. Follow the steps below to achieve a Grade A+ rating.
Interactive Security Checklist
1. Factory Router Admin Password
Did you change the web administration password from the factory default ("admin", "password", or blank)?
Log in to your router gateway and go to Administration > System Settings to change the master password to a strong 12+ character phrase.
2. Wi-Fi Encryption Protocol
Is your wireless network secured with modern WPA3 or WPA2-AES encryption (never WEP, WPA-TKIP, or Open)?
Navigate to Wireless > Security Settings and select "WPA2-PSK (AES)" or "WPA3-Personal". Never select TKIP or WEP.
3. WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) PIN
Is Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) disabled in your router configuration?
Open Wireless > WPS Settings and toggle WPS to Disabled. WPS PIN authentication is vulnerable to rapid automated brute-force attacks.
4. Remote WAN Web Management
Is Remote Management (accessing router login from external internet IP) disabled?
Go to Administration > Remote Management and ensure "Enable Remote Management" is unchecked so only local devices can view the login screen.
5. UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)
Have you disabled UPnP to prevent malware from automatically opening incoming firewall ports?
Navigate to Advanced > UPnP Settings and turn UPnP off. If a game requires open ports, forward them manually.
6. Router Firmware Updates
Has your router received an official manufacturer firmware update in the last 6 months?
Visit System Tools > Firmware Upgrade and click "Check for Updates" to patch known security CVE vulnerabilities.
7. Customized Private Gateway IP
Did you change your router IP from standard 192.168.1.1 / 192.168.0.1 to a custom subnet (e.g. 192.168.45.1)?
In LAN / DHCP Settings, change the router IP to a non-standard third octet. This deters basic automated cross-site request forgery attacks.
8. Isolated Smart Home / Guest Network
Are smart plugs, cameras, and IoT gadgets segregated onto an isolated Guest Wi-Fi SSID?
Enable the Guest Network feature in your router and ensure "Allow Guests to Access Local Network" is disabled.
9. Admin Dashboard HTTPS Protocol
Does your router encrypt management traffic using HTTPS / SSL rather than plain text HTTP?
Enable "HTTPS Login" in router Management options to prevent local network sniffers from intercepting your credentials in transit.
10. WAN Ping / ICMP Echo Response
Is "Respond to Ping on WAN Port" disabled to keep your IP stealthy against automated internet port scanners?
In Security > Firewall, check "Ignore Ping from WAN" or "Stealth Mode" so automated botnets receive no response.
Why Securing Your Router is Your Home's Most Critical Defense
Your Wi-Fi router is the single gateway connecting every phone, laptop, smart TV, security camera, and smart lock in your home to the global internet. If an attacker gains access to your router's administration panel:
- They can alter your DNS server settings to redirect bank and email logins to malicious clone phishing sites.
- They can enroll your router into automated Mirai botnets that execute global DDoS attacks.
- They can monitor unencrypted internet traffic and discover every device connected to your private network.
Taking 5 minutes to disable WPS, update firmware, and isolate smart IoT devices on a guest network eliminates over 98% of automated home cyberattacks.
