Wi-Fi Channel Overlap & Spectrum Guide
Eliminate wireless interference, minimize gaming ping jitter, and choose the optimal frequency channel and channel width for your environment.
Smart Channel Recommendation Engine
Configure your environment to calculate the ideal wireless settings for your router.
Visual Spectrum Architecture: 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz vs 6 GHz
2.4 GHz Spectrum (Crowded, High Range)
The 2.4 GHz band only has 3 non-overlapping channels: 1, 6, and 11. Every other channel overlaps and destroys throughput.
5 GHz Spectrum (High Speed, Lower Range)
Standard indoor non-DFS frequencies. Zero radar interference. Best choice for competitive online gaming.
Shares bandwidth with airport and weather radar. Router will disconnect and jump channels if radar is detected.
Higher allowable transmission power. Great for overcoming walls while remaining free from radar disconnects.
How to Change Wi-Fi Channel on Your Router
- Log in to your router gateway IP: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.
- Enter your router's administrator password (or check factory defaults in our Passwords Directory).
- Click on Wireless or Wi-Fi Settings → Advanced Wireless Settings.
- Locate the Channel dropdown: change from Auto to 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz, or 36, 44, or 149 for 5 GHz.
- Set Channel Width: use 20 MHz for 2.4 GHz and 80 MHz for 5 GHz.
- Click Save & Apply. Your router will restart Wi-Fi with the new channel.
